Advanced Chords (Sessions 10-13)

Overview of Lessons in Advanced Chords

In Beginning Steps my words were, “Dare to be simple; use basic chords.”   In Bigger Steps our palette of colors was expanded as familiar sequential patterns were studied and applied.  In this final session, jazz chords and chords derived from the modes are related to chords we already know.  There are new delights to be discovered as you move beyond the world of major and minor scales to other scales called modes:  Dorian, Mixolydian, Lydian and Phrygian.  Modulation, the final session is filled with simple, then more creative ways of modulating to other keys.  The topics include:

  • The Altered Mediant Chord
  • Tri-Tone Substitute Chords
  • Modal Harmonies:  Dorain, Phrygian, Lydian, Mixolydian
  • Modulation to All Keys

The musical examples from the teaching videos are included as both Powerpoint and PDF files on the enclosed CD-R, along with MIDI files and MP4 files which can be downloaded on your flash drive, iPad, or other mobile device.
